The valve guides, as other pieces of the engine, must have a robust construction, able to tolerate extreme operating conditions, and particularly, must absorb lateral forces to the valve stem.

The guides also centers the valve on the valve seat and conducts a part of the heat from the valve head, via the valve stem, to the cylindrical head.
